Description
Yellowroot – Xanthorhiza simplicissima – A hard-to-find and rare North American native.
Yellowroot is very different from Goldenseal, another North American native. Both plants’ roots contain the highly medicinal and sought-after phytochemical called Berberine (also found in Barberry Root)
Yellow root is unassuming but attractive and pretty foliage wise – it forms a sprawling stand. Leaves turn yellow in fall. Flowers are quite alluring – a brownish purple. I grow it in part shade and find it carefree. I like combining plantings with Stoneroot, the orchid like flowers of both plants compliment one another beautifully.
