Description
A wonderful North American perennial small shrub – with very cool clusters of white flowers followed by deep burgundy-purple, inedible berries. This is a big favorite plant of mine. It is tricky to germinate and I usually hoard them, but this year I got a bunch to germinate!
Zones 5-8 – Native range from New Brunswick south to North Carolina. Easy to grow – adapts to a variety of conditions.
A member of the Ginseng family, the roots are aromatic and spicy in flavor and were once used as a flavoring for teas. Likes rich and deep woodland soil.
Light shade is best – a great edge plant.
Grows 3-5 feet high and wide; spreads slowly by thick rhizomes
