Description
Also called Sullivant’s Milkweed, named after American botanist, William Starling Sullivant.
Generally similar in style to Common Milkweed but less aggressive with slightly smaller flowers and a smooth appearance on the stems, leaves, and pods.
Attractive to hummingbirds and a very wide variety of pollinators. Leaves, like all milkweeds, provide food for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. Prairie Milkweed is also highly favored and enjoyed by the larvae of the Milkweed Leaf-Miner.
Sun is a must – soil can be medium to medium-moist. Perennial, developing a long taproot in a couple years, which will help the plant in times of drought. Pick a spot you want to keep it in for man y years!
Prairie Milkweed easily hybridizes with Common Milkweed.
