Description

Great Canada St. John’s Wort (Hypericum majus) is a North American native version of the classic St. John’s Wort.

Great Canada St. John’s Wort is native to much of the Northern United States and Canada. It prefers wet to moist soil conditions with low fertility. It can tolerate soils containing sand, silt, and gravel. Shallow standing water is also tolerated, if it is only temporary. In its native range, habitats include wet sand prairies, swales, sandy marshes, and fens. Its rhizomatous root system allows it to spread and form small colonies.
Great Canada St. John’s Wort has small yellow flowers. They typically bloom from mid-summer to early autumn. The flowers attract many native bees. After the long blooming season, the flowers give way to showy purplish red or maroon seeds.
