A field of glowing yellow goldenrod – the tones of yellow changing throughout the day – is one of the most beautiful and magical natural views…. And one that we tend to take for granted in this area!

As summer progresses here in the Northeast, we cannot help but appreciate the swaths of yellows and golds as the goldenrods start to mature. We have over 10 species of goldenrod native to this specific area of North America, and they give us a progressive bloom of yellows and golds as the different species start to bloom and then mature to buffy seed heads. Note: there are over a hundred species world-wide, showing just how important this plant is medicinally!

Goldenrod is one of our favorite plants – it is a fabulous permaculture plant, it harbors diverse forms of life, supports native beneficial insects, provides honeybees with pollen and nectar in late summer, makes a delicious healing and balancing tea, is a main ingredient in some of our most effective herbal salves and ointments, and just to add some whimsey to its existence, makes a fabulous natural dye!

We will be exploring and celebrating all things goldenrod, which is known in a variety of herbal traditions for its healing abilities. Considered a warming and stimulating plant, it balances and heals the urinary tract, the digestive tract and is great for reducing seasonal allergies. It is a go-to anti-inflammatory herb – and is a worthy partner in healing wounds, skin issues, and deeper issues like bruises, sprains, muscle spasms.

We will be discussing growing goldenrod, using it medicinally, as well as using it as a natural plant dye. We will be harvesting out in our big goldenrod field, learn how to process it for different uses, sip some tea, create some great salves, and plunge into dying fabrics in different ways!

Cost includes all materials, a couple rare native goldenrod plants in pots, a goldenrod salve, and a dye project.  And you’ll also be going home with great info, new inspirations, and more!

We add new species of goldenrod to our farmstead every year - check out the species we have potted up for sale here!
