Description

A wonderful addition for your native woodland guild.

Usually occurs naturally a bit further south than here, but I’ve had good luck with these getting through the winter here. Zone 6. Needs shade, but can do well in moist or dry woodland rich/acidic soils.

Roots used as flavoring by indigenous people, and root extracts and leaf infusions used by indigenous people to treat heart and lung conditions and stomach pain.

Only gets a couple inches tall – leaves are thick and dark green and stay pretty green all winter. Flowers are weird although they occur almost against the ground, and they are like little brownish speckled jugs, so you may miss them!

A nice contrast planted among ferns…
