Description
Alkanna orientalis, like Anchusa azurea, is also known as Alkanet – this makes things very confusing! Alkanna orientalis has yellow flowers and white roots – it is not a dye plant! I am trying to source seeds for Alkanna tinctoria, the true red dye plant, but haven’t had any luck for many years.
Hardy zone 4-11. Native to Greece, Turkey and Middle East. Leaves are fuzzy, soft and citrus-scented – self-mulching like comfrey or stachys. Creates a plump mound. Golden Yellow flowers. A delightful herb garden plant.
