Description

Christmas Ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) are a classic and very common fern in Eastern North America. It is evergreen, although the leaves lay down in winter. I love this fern – it is simple and graceful leaf shape – a great contrast to the frilly and lacey fronds of other ferns.

Christmas ferns are not picky – although they prefer soil rich in organic matter that is well-drained and yet gets regular water. They love to grow on slopes. They are quite drought tolerant and hardy ferns in general. They enjoy woodland settings in shade or part shade.

They are called “Christmas” ferns, because they remained green until around the holiday season and so they were once widely used as a Christmas decoration.

The plant gets about 1 to 2 feet high, and will naturalize and gradually colonize a space even in poor soil. Zones 3 – 9.

All of our plants and seedlings are grown organically and are timed size-wise and transplanted for optional growth and production.
