Description

Acorus calamus americanus. Hardy (zone 3) and native thick grass with a medicinal root. Likes boggy places with rich soil. Spreads gently via rhizome. Great for stabilizing riparian areas, boggy spots, pond edges.

Lightly scented spicy scented leaves. Used medicinally for digestive issues as well as a brain rejuvenator, believed to be great for memory and cognitive abilities.

Being this is the North American variety, it doesn’t contain the carcinogen, cis-isoasarone, which is found in European varieties.

The root is used as a drying agent and fixative – similar to orris root, which it is sometimes called. Also the powdered root is used as a vermifuge and insecticide, especially for fleas.
