Description

A long-lived and slow-growing native perennial that will form a large shrub. Yellow flowers are followed by lovely brown pods. Foliage is pea-like as this is a member of the legume family. Nitrogen fixer – this plant will improve the soil it is planted in. Native to Eastern N.A. Good pollinator attracter and supporter as well. A great addition to a native medicinal garden. Like full sun and drought tolerant once established. Average well-drained soil. Gets about 4-6 feet tall.

Very similar in appearance to S. hebecarpa – only the pods really show the differences. The Wild Senna pods will readily open and let the seeds fall out, but Maryland senna pods will stay closed. This is a great synergy as wild turkeys appreciate the two seasons of food. Both are host plants for the larvae of many species of Sulphur Butterflies.
