Description

Pycnanthemum muticum – Common name is Clustered Mountain Mint or Blunt Mountain Mint or Short-Toothed Mountain Mint. Foliage is smooth, with abundant flowers which are surrounded by lovely silver-white bracts. Flowers have a nice, tight, pincushion look. Although this species is less drought resistant than the others, it is also pretty aggressive – I do find that I need to weed it from the other side of the fencing and mowing keeps it from overtaking more lawn space. It is a nice plant for growing next to a lawn, as it is easy to maintain the edge by simply mowing it back with the regular mowing of the lawn. Of all the pycnanthemums, this one is the most invasive.

Pycnanthemums are great native plants that nourish and support wildlife of all sorts. They do not spread like the culinary mentha mints. The Mountain Mints are exquisite plants and a big favorite of mine. They attract so many insects that the plant looks like it is moving. The flowers are wonderful, the leaves scented with a wonderful bright mint flavor. In winter the seed heads are amazing for decorating or leaving for birds to enjoy in the garden. We have 6 different species for sale.
