Description
Pycnanthemum incanum – This might be my favorite mountain mint, although is a hard call! This is often referred to as Hoary Mountain Mint – which may be why I favor it – I love plants called Hoary – Hoary refers to the fact that the plant has the shaggy look of a Hoar Frost – when, instead of laying down on surfaces, a frost branches out into the air… The leaves of Hoary Mountain Mint, appear grayish silver from the fuzziness. It doesn’t make a huge abundance of flowers, but they are large and showy and enveloped in white bracts of leaves. Very, very cool. This may be the best choice for spaces that are very dry and rocky.
P. incanum is sometimes called Smokey Mountain Mint. And in dry seasons, the foliage can get a bronzy coloration.
Pycnanthemums are great native plants that nourish and support wildlife of all sorts. They do not spread like the culinary mentha mints. The Mountain Mints are exquisite plants and a big favorite of mine. They attract so many insects that the plant looks like it is moving. The flowers are wonderful, the leaves scented with a wonderful bright mint flavor. In winter the seed heads are amazing for decorating or leaving for birds to enjoy in the garden. We have 6 different species for sale.
Coming Late June 2026!
