Orris or Iris germanica (quart pot)

Description

An iris could be referred to as Orris – meaning that its root can be used as Orris. Many flags and iris can be used an orris but there are two main species and this is one of them.

Iris x germanica florentina is hardy  (zone 4) and produces nearly white flowers with traces of blue or purple.

Dried powdered rhizome is a major source of orris, used in perfumery and potpourris, and as a drying agent and fixative in crafts. I sometimes put a hunk in a fabric bag in with herbal roots that I don’t use so often as a natural silica gel or desiccant…
