Description
Fall Gold is an everbearing (primocane) yellow raspberry cultivar, known for its exceptionally sweet, honey-like flavor and ability to produce two crops per year—one in early summer and a larger one in late summer/fall. It is a hardy, vigorous hybrid (often a mix of R. idaeus and R. pungens oldhami) developed for cold climates, producing soft, golden-yellow berries.
Fruit: Medium to large, conical-shaped berries that turn a dark, golden-yellow or orange-yellow when fully ripe, noted for being very sweet with low acidity.
Harvest Time: Produces a fall crop on the top portion of new (first-year) canes and a second, earlier crop on the same canes the following summer.
Hardiness: Extremely hardy, making them ideal for northern climates, particularly in zones 4-9.
Plant Type: A self-fertile, deciduous shrub that grows 4 to 6 feet tall, often requiring trellis support due to vigorous, sometimes arching, canes.
Uses: Due to their delicate nature, they are best for fresh eating, desserts, or preserves.
Advantage: The golden color often tricks birds into ignoring them, leaving more fruit for harvest.
Growing and Maintenance:
Fall Gold is versatile and can be managed in two ways: pruned to the ground annually for one large fall crop, or maintained as a biennial to get both summer and fall harvests. They thrive in full sun and well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soil.
