Crithmum maritimum
Description
Also known as Rock Samphire, Sea Fennel, Sea Bean, Sea Asparagus, Pickle Weed, Glassowort, or St. Peter’s Herb (patron saint of fisherman)
Samphire is native to coastal areas, tidal flats and salt marshes in all parts of the UK and reaches its peak harvest in summer. Not quite hardy around here, we grow it in large pots and pull them in each winter. It does grow fast though, so you could grow it as an annual and simply enjoy it as a summer green.
Unusual, succulent, salty – Samphire is such fun!
Likes full sun, and well-drained soil, but do not let it dry out. It does prefer salty mist and a low nitrogen soil. So don’t amend your soil with nitrogen heavy fertilizer; instead use kelp powder, greensand, and even some atlantic sea salt (not table salt).
Samphire is mineral rich – containing high levels of iodine, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and trace minerals – it is also rich in vitamins A, C, B2, and D. Traditionally used herbally as a digestive aid.
I am working on getting some Salicornia europaea or Marsh Samphire seeds to germinate for the future.
